Today twenty years ago, on October 31, 2000, Westlife released ”My Love”. The song went straight to number one on the UK Top 40. Additionally, it won the Record of the Year award.

Written by Jörgen, Per Magnusson, David Kreuger and Pelle Nylén, the song was taken from the band’s second album ”Coast to Coast”. It too charted at number one in the UK, as well as in Ireland, Scotland and Malaysia.

However, ”My Love” was not the premier Westlife UK Top 40 number one single written by Jörgen, Per and David. The first, ”If I Let You Go”, hit the top spot on August 21, 1999, the second one, ”Fool Again”, on April 8, 2000. All three songs were recorded at the legendary Cheiron Studios in Stockholm.

Jörgen also co-wrote a fourth Westlife UK number one song, ”Unbreakable” which landed atop of the chart on November 16, 2002. This particular song would eight years later lead to a surprising telephone call from… Well, that is another story…

Danish Songwriters Guild (DPA) visited Stockholm last Friday, and I’d been asked to be the speaker at their members’ camp.

Together with really talented songwriters, obviously, I sat down for three and a half hours of Q&As, discussing how to write songs reaching the top of the international charts.

Thanks guys for listening, hopefully I could contribute with some pieces of advice. I’m really looking forward to meeting you again.

DPA (Danske Populær Autorer) is a nonprofit organization, democratically governed by its more than 700 auteurs among Denmark’s very best and most professional within all known popular genres of music.

Prior to Christmas Eve in 2009, neither wrapping gifts or for hours monitoring the turkey in the oven were my top priorities. Instead, I spent all my time in the music studio putting the finishing touches to the song ”When You Tell the World You’re Mine”, composed exclusively for the upcoming Royal Wedding of H.R.H. Crown Princess Victoria and H.R.H. Prince Daniel.

Well, on Christmas Day, after working on it for more than a year, the song was finally completed. I opened the studio door and asked if I might get a slice of that turkey.
(I did.)
